Empowering users with effortless, real-time insights to take control of their well-being—right from their own bathroom.
Routine health tracking is often overlooked, especially when it involves inconvenient procedures or clinic visits. For those with genetic predispositions, this can mean missing early signs of serious conditions. As part of the Interactive Systems course, I explored how a universal daily habit—using the toilet—could become a source of non-intrusive health insights. The result: Dr. Loo, a conceptual smart toilet system that passively collects and analyzes health data. Equipped with discreet sensors and digital interfaces, it monitors waste, detects trends, and delivers personalized health recommendations—seamlessly integrating preventive care into daily life.

From Insights to Innovation: Laying the Foundation
Every great design begins with research. I started by analyzing state-of-the-art solutions and comparable products to understand existing approaches, uncovering what worked—and what didn’t. This benchmark research laid the groundwork for identifying meaningful opportunities for innovation.
To shape the product’s identity, I developed a mood board that set the visual and emotional tone. Immersing myself in the brand world allowed me to translate its essence into a design language that felt both intuitive and cohesive.
With a clear vision in place, I focused on defining the product’s core functionalities—resulting in a set of key features designed to bring Dr. Loo to life.
Key Features
🧠 User Recognition
Anal print recognition ensures data is accurately linked to the correct user.
⚖️ Built-in Scale
Automatically records weight upon sitting and displays it discreetly.
📅 Progress Calendar
Visualizes trends and tracks health data over time in an intuitive calendar view.
💩 Stool Analysis
Detects abnormalities, tracks consistency, and provides relevant insights.
🥦 Dietary Feedback
Recommends hydration, fiber, or dietary changes based on stool quality.
📨 Smart Sharing
Users can sync with doctors, trainers, or caregivers to share selected health updates.
⏱️ Session Timer
Tracks time spent on the toilet—useful for managing constipation or public toilet efficiency.
The first step is to create a profile for more accurate health tracking. This can easily be done at home before using the toilet. Users can also pair their profile with a Fitbit or smartwatch.
Here’s an example of a user journey: a user who wants to track their weight and share progress with their personal trainer.
After receiving the results, the user can share their progress with a chosen contact.
Dr. Loo can also be implemented in various scenarios where toilet users can connect with each other. Similar to Nextbike, Dr. Loo can help users find the nearest available toilet.

Development and UX Process
1. Exploration & Research
I began with deep research into health tech trends, toilet innovation, and biometric analysis to understand existing capabilities.
2. Function & Scope Definition
I mapped out which data would be most useful for users and how it could be delivered meaningfully, leading to a focused feature set.
3. Scenario Development
Use cases were defined—such as implementation in gyms or wellness centers—where health tracking could offer immediate benefits.
4. Persona Creation
User personas helped clarify the needs, behaviors, and expectations of different target audiences, such as health-conscious users or those managing chronic conditions.
5. User Journey Mapping
I built detailed journey maps to ensure a seamless experience—from recognition to data review and action.
6. Visual Design
Finally, I translated the concept into a cohesive visual experience, combining clarity, accessibility, and a clean UI to reduce friction and enhance trust.
